30 Minutes

The first half hour of the morning often sets the tone for the rest of the day. Why not spend the time doing something you love?

One gentleman I know wakes at 5:30am, pours himself a strong cup of coffee, sits at his desk, and spends the next half hour studying Ancient Greek.  He has performed with ritual every morning for the past year.  “I always wanted to study Ancient Greek.  It was something I was going to do after I retired.  Then I thought, why wait?”

Spending the first 30 minutes of the morning doing something he loves serves two purposes, he says.  “When I wake up in the morning my mind is spinning about all the things I need to do, most of which I don’t want to do.  Studying Greek clears my mind and calms me.”

“Second, it makes me feel good.  A lot of things we do during the day are draining.  I feel like I’m starting the day with the tank topped off.  And I feel like I’ve gotten to do something I really want to do.”

If you do something enjoyable, fun, or fulfilling first thing in the morning you will plunge into the rest of your day with a more positive frame of mind.
